It’s very difficult to understand others when we never try to understand ourselves first. Knowing yourself is a vital step to change your life for the better. If you don't have a sense of your own values, you’ll listen to what others have to say about yourself, and without realising, you'll end up adopting somebody’s else perspective of you. Give yourself some time and space to get away from others judgment and expectations to focus on knowing yourself and understanding your emotions. Always pay attention to your feelings in a non-judgmental way. Allow your body to physically experience your emotions, and find exactly what is bothering you instead of feeling bad without knowing why. We all need to reflect on things.
The first thing you need to pay attention when trying to gain self knowledge is what you are thinking, and how often you have the same patterns of thought. It is impossible to analyse our behaviour without focusing on our emotions. Sometimes it takes our emotions some time to catch up with our behaviour. Knowing yourself requires dedication, but everyone is able to figure out who they truly are and achieve a great level of self improvement from the experience. Nobody can define who you are, but you.
Everyone has negative thought patterns, identifying negative thoughts is the first step to avoid constant negative emotions. Practice attentive non-judgment on a daily basis and be aware of your negative thinking and self talk, but do not beat yourself up over it. If you feel that there is something you don’t like about yourself, be reassured that you are able to change your life through your mind, your thinking, and your behaviour. By observing negative thoughts, you can suppress them from your mind.
When you know yourself and accept your flaws, you are able to start embracing who you really are instead of hiding what you don’t like about yourself under the covers. Self knowledge leads to acceptance and is really empowering. It gives you the wisdom to trust your own judgment and be okay with your mistakes. Part of accepting who you are is realising that through mistakes you grow, learn, and improve yourself.
Self understanding allows you to think about past negative events in your life in a way that you know that they do not define you. Self assurance and trust in your own abilities is the key to achieve success and confidence. Finding yourself is possible through self knowledge. Finding the real you is an enlightening experience. It gives you a sense of direction to never feel lost again, because you know your values, and you are able to define exactly what you want in life.
