There will come to a point in our journey at which we must cease to stay stuck in the past, and stop past mistakes to define us. Constantly thinking about our regrets can keep us from enjoying life. The first step to leave what happened behind, is to learn to forgive ourselves, in order to move on.
A past left unresolved will continue to bother us if we don't address the underlying emotions. We can not change our past, but we can change the way we perceive it and handle it from now on. Constant rethinking and regretting past decisions gives us anxiety. Be patient and kind with yourself. It may take awhile for you to achieve acceptance and move on, but it is vital to remember that even in the darkest of times, you can concentrate on the bright side.
When we keep holding on to the past, we risk carrying over all the emotional pain into other new experiences and relationships. Maybe you did not take the right action in the past, or your inaction is the cause of your regret, but you need to focus your energy to accept what happened and let it go, so can you truly begin rising to the top.
When you think about your past from now on, always look for the lessons learned and recognise that life lessons make you wiser. Beating yourself up over things beyond your control is not going to help you in any way. It is important to own up to your mistakes and feelings, but also allow yourself to move on. Realising that you could've done better in the past, is a clear sign that you are now a better and wiser person than you were before. You do not have to be stuck in your past forever. Make a decision to adopt a new perspective, and keep in mind that you deserve the best, despite your past. It is your decision to choose how your past affects your present and your future.
